Cerafiltec secures major projects to enhance the circular economy of water

Circularity Capital portfolio company Cerafiltec, a leading designer and manufacturer of ceramic ultrafiltration membrane solutions for the global water industry, has secured four significant membrane bioreactor (MBR) projects with a total a capacity of 13.7 million litres per day.

MBRs combine various membrane processes, like microfiltration or ultrafiltration, with a biological ‘activated sludge’ wastewater treatment process and are widely used for large-scale industrial and municipal raw wastewater treatment. The use of MBRs is especially important in regions suffering from water scarcity – where circular solutions for keeping water useable for longer is not only economically beneficial, but a necessity.

Cerafiltec’s four new projects span Italy, Mexico, the UAE and Africa, covering a range of scales from a 250 m³ per day industrial MBR, to a 10,000 m³ per day municipal MBR. The company will replace traditional polymeric membranes (both hollow fibre and flat sheet) with Cerafiltec’s cutting-edge ceramic flat membrane technology, alongside upgrading conventional systems to ceramic MBRs.

These landmark projects highlight the industry’s transition towards more resilient and dependable water treatment solutions. Cerafiltec’s ceramic membranes have an advantage over traditional technologies like polymeric membranes because they help eliminate fibre breakages and further operational challenges.

These membranes increase water quality and longevity through the removal of microplastics and industrial pollutants. Cerafiltec’s market-leading filtration tech lasts longer, provides superior water quality, uses less energy and has a far lower total cost of ownership when compared to more traditional solutions.

Kay Gunther Gabriel, Chief Technology Officer at Cerafiltec, said, “The successful acquisition of these projects is a clear indicator of the global market's growing appreciation for the advantages of ceramic flat membranes.”

“System integrators and end users are increasingly recognising the value of solutions that offer extended lifetimes and reduced maintenance, leading to a superior total cost of ownership. As Cerafiltec continues to pioneer advancements in water and wastewater treatment, these achievements underscore our commitment to driving progress and innovation toward ensuring clean water access for everyone.”
