CERAFILTEC provides filtration solution to world's largest data center

Circularity Capital portfolio company CERAFILTEC, a leading designer and manufacturer of ceramic ultrafiltration membrane solutions for the global water industry, has partnered with xAI to implement a truly sustainable water management solution for the world’s largest supercomputer data centre.

 xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, will build the world’s largest ceramic membrane bioreactor (MBR) to enable the reuse of 49 million litres of municipal wastewater per day (MLD). This recycled water will be used for cooling the firm’s supercomputing data centre in Tennessee which, according to Musk, will be the ‘most powerful AI training cluster in the world’.

 The agreement will see CERAFILTEC supply its pioneering ceramic membrane technology as part of a fast-track project set for completion in 2025. The solution was chosen by xAI due to its superior reliability, efficiency and ability to overcome common membrane issues – such as fibre breakages and delicate cleaning regimens.

 As the data centre industry continues to expand, circular water management is essential to maintain high operational performance. CERAFILTEC’s solution is designed to meet increasingly stringent requirements, with its innovative ceramic technology providing a durable, reusable solution that supports a circular economy, effectively eliminating plastic waste from conventional polymeric membranes and significantly minimising negative environmental impacts.
